1.  Bell work.  Significant Excerpt worksheet: The meaning of the title: On page 119, Miss Maudie shares a life lesson with Scout. Copy down the underlined portion below:

“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

• Circle the words: “sin”, “kill” and “mockingbird”
• Write down the connotative meaning of each of the words as we brainstorm as a class.

·       6-minute fluency practice:

Using the class brainstorm of the connotative meaning of the words “sin”, “kill”, and “mockingbird”, explain the meaning of Miss Maudie’s life lesson.
