1.  Bell work.  Significant Excerpt worksheet: The meaning of the title: On page 119, Miss Maudie shares a life lesson with Scout. Copy down the underlined portion below:

“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

  • Circle the words: “sin”, “kill” and “mockingbird”
  • Write down the connotative meaning of each of the words as we brainstorm as a class.
·       6-minute fluency practice:
Using the class brainstorm of the connotative meaning of the words “sin”, “kill”, and “mockingbird”, explain the meaning of Miss Maudie’s life lesson. How does the lesson apply to characters and events in TKAM? OR How does it apply to your life? OR How does it apply to events happening in the world?

2.   Ch. 9 Review: Complete a Close Reading of the Ch. 9 homework. 
Directions: Re-read the passage and decide what you think the overall tone of the passage seems to be.
Write:  The tone of the passage at the end of chapter 9 seems to be _____________________.
Re-read the passage again and highlight diction that seems to be important to the overall tone of the passage

·       How is each identity different from another?
·       What have Scout and Jem discovered about Atticus’ private & public identity in Ch. 10?
